Love is like alcohol. It intoxicates while giving you the power to feel good, and make you feel invincible with the zeal to do anything.
Love truly intoxicates and there’s no knowing what an intoxicated person can do.
People have been known to commit murder literarily, for love. Some have abandoned families for the sake of love.
There’s no doubt about it, love makes us do the craziest things. Most times, it doesn’t feel ‘crazy’ while you are doing it but ‘when your eyes clear,’ as we say, you will realise just how crazy you’ve been. While doing something for somebody you love is not bad, there are definitely some things people do that are totally wacky.
Some, you are proud of, but some, you tend to regret especially when the relationship is over.
The Next Edition spoke to some people on some of the craziest ‘love gestures’ they have ever made.
Francesca Uko, Microbiologist
“While I was in the University I sold ‘Okirika’ for my boyfriend at the time. It was during his service year and he went to Cotonou and bought some bales of clothes. It then fell on me as the girlfriend to help sell it. So I took them and went to the girls’ hostel, I was knocking on doors one after the other. They will look at it, some will buy and owe. Some would buy and pay.
“I will still go after them to collect the money. That’s how I was climbing bike and going to all the hostels one after the other in the name of love.”

“I travelled via night bus to Port Harcourt to surprise my girlfriend by knocking on her door in the morning after I said good night the previous day. It was her birthday and I made her think the night before that she would mark it without me. She was just really surprised at how I got there the next morning. She told everyone about it. We didn’t even have cake but it was a good birthday. We are married now.”

“Please don’t judge me. I know it was stupid and I would never advise anyone to do it ever. I had a boyfriend soon after I finished secondary school who used to play football with his friends every Sunday. One day, he twisted his ankle and he was told that if they didn’t start treating him immediately it might get worse. I didn’t clear my WAEC the first time and as at the time this happened, I was about to put in for another one. So I was left to choose: To pay for and register for my exams or to use the money to pay for his treatment. I choose to pay for his treatment. He didn’t have money and no one was willing to help at the time, so I offered. Anyway, I was lucky because I still had time before the entry was closed. Two months after, he got back my money and paid for me to register for the exams. I would NEVER do this again though. I’ve grown and learnt. My love should exclude my money please.”

“I think it was with my first girlfriend, if you can call it that. I was in SS2 and she was in the same class. I was always trying so hard to impress her. So one time, you know that period just before they give posts to the SS2 students and the senior students are especially ‘mean.’ She was getting punished during a Labour assembly and had been kneeling for a while. The Labour prefect then said anyone that wanted to take over and help her should come out let her stand. I gallantly bounced out and knelt and she left. The senior seeing a boy now changed his mind and decided to flog as part of the punishment. The beating I got that day eh, it was something else. I regretted doing that by the fifth stroke of cane before it even went bad. I never forgot that incident.”

“I’m really ashamed of this one but it happened. My dad used to leave his wallet out when he came back from work. Normally we would take small change here and there and nothing will happen. On this fateful day, (a week or so to Valentine, my first valentine ) I decided to take more than small change so that I could get a good gift for my boyfriend. My dad noticed a big sum was missing and assembled everyone. He asked everyone who took the money and I refused to own up to it. He beat everyone that day. Till today I haven’t told my siblings I was the one. You know we talked about it after the beating and I still said no, we now decided he mustn’t have brought it back. I bought him boxers, singlets and something else and felt so cool. The beating I got was forgotten.”

“This was back in Year 2 of Uni or so. There’s this girl I liked, note liked, I didn’t even ask her out yet o. Her mum owned a stall in school so I used to go there and eat and sometimes drag my friends there. I timed it when I knew she was going to be there helping her mum so we would say hi and I will ask how are you or something like that. They knew me well there. One day, her mum needed fuel for the generator and I volunteered to go. From then on, I didn’t know when I became the guy to do odd things around. So I would go to eat and the mum would say, ‘Eh hen, you are here. Please help us go and buy minerals, it has finished.” This went on for good months. When I now asked her out, she had a boyfriend. I stopped going there that very day.”

“This isn’t even that long ago that it happened. I pretended when I was around my boyfriend that there was another guy vying for my attention just for the kicks. I would be ending these calls just when I was meeting him, or like pick my phone and smile like I don’t want to pick the call and then be evasive when he asked. It was so stupid and pointless, the day he caught me eh. The shame that enveloped me, till today I still feel it.”

“In this social media age, I had created various fake accounts to troll my now ex on Instagram. It started innocently enough and I intended to tell him later but all of a sudden I was creating all these accounts to be commenting, sliding into dm and all that. He finally started flirting with one of the ‘girls’ that was me and it just affected me. Till this day, he doesn’t know why I broke up with him.”
