The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) said on Sunday it worked behind the scenes to ensure the scrapping of the Police Anti-robbery Squad (SARS).
The Forum’s Chairman and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, stated this in reaction to criticisms that the governors failed to speak up in support of agitations by the youth for the unit to be disbanded.
The Next Edition reports that #EndSARS protesters have been on the streets of several states in the country and Abuja demanding an end to Police brutality and scrapping of SARS.

Celebrities like Runtown, Falz, Tiwa Savage, Mr. Macaroni, as well as social media influencer, Aisha Yesufu, among many others, have led protesters in Lagos and Abuja, calling for an end to the killer squad.
Reacting to claims that the governors failed to join their voices to the demands of the people, Gov. Fayemi noted that the governors had been the issue long before now.
His tweeted: “To those who claim Governors have been silent on the FSARS issue, we spoke long before others jumped on the issue.
“And we have continued to work on it behind the scenes.”
Bowing to pressure, the Federal Government on Sunday announced the dissolution of SARS.
The announcement, as reported by The Next Edition, was contained in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations officer, Frank Mba, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.
The statement said though the unit was dissolved with immediate effect, its personnel would be redeployed to other units of the police force.
