There was pandemonium on Tuesday at Sterling Bank on Abak Road, Uyo of Akwa Ibom State as some armed robbers attacked it.

The robbers went away with a large sum of money just withdrawn by a bank customer.

Findings by our correspondent revealed that the robbers shot into the air as they went away towards FCMB.

It was also gathered that the original target of the robbers was a bullion van which was to deliver money in one of the banks in the Abak area.

The attempts to attack the bullion van however failed.

An eyewitness told our correspondent that it was at that point that the robbers resolved to attack the customer who had just withdrawn some large amount.

The robbers were said to have made a stop-over at the First Bank too, but did not succeed in operating there.

Although it could not be confirmed whether any life was lost, there was a big splash of blood on the floor at the scene.

The robbery is coming exactly the day a new police commissioner, Zubair Muazu, assumed duty in the state.

He had, earlier in the day, warned criminals in the state to vacate or face the full wrath of the law.

His words:  “The primary responsibility of police is to maintain peace and security. I am here to provide just that, and I want to assure you that this command will not leave any stone unturned to ensure that Akwa Ibom people go about their normal duties with fear of molestation.

“I am sending warning signals to all criminal elements to start leaving the state because we are ready to curtail their activities and we have the capacity to do so.”
