The opposition Peoples Democratic Party has declared that all hands are on deck to return to government come 2019.

Its caretaker committee chairman, Ahmed Makarfi, made this declaration on Saturday during the party’s non-elective national convention in Abuja.

Stressing that Nigerians had experienced hunger and suffering under the current dispensation of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Makarfi said the PDP would bring about the desired change with comfort and happiness.

He said that the party meant well for Nigerians and they would carry out a number of programmes to alleviate poverty.

His words:  “We will work hard to sack the APC government in 2019. While you pray for PDP to come back, we will continue to work hard to see that the sufferings today become past.

“One of the things we will introduce in 2019 is a student loan scheme to solve the yearnings of Nigerian to youth. There will be no hunger because Nigerians will have plenty to eat and even enough cash left in their pocket.”

Makarfi said the party had gone through turbulence in recent times, but had overcome.

According to him, no fewer than five< efforts were made to stop the convention in the past two days, to no avail.

“Today is the beginning of a foundation that was laid long ago. PDP is a family and blood-related in the sense that we mean well for Nigerians.

“We have gone through a lot and we intend to do a lot for Nigerians. This is our path to greatness and entrenchment of democracy. At least five attempts were made to stop this convention in the last two days but they did not succeed,” he said.

Also speaking at the occasion, Ifeanyi Okowa, governor of Delta and the chairman of the convention’s planning committee, declared that the party was back.

“The PDP is back and more strengthened and resolved to take over power from the APC. We are leaving no stone unturned in doing that.

“It is time for self examination for all of us and to return to what is right bearing in mind our mistakes in the past. We have overcome our challenges and we must all support those things that add value to the growth of our great party.

“It is time to come back home. With a firm resolve that we need to bounce back in 2019, we must think the best for ourselves,” he said.

Okowa said having tasted governance by two parties, Nigerians could determine which one was better for them.

It would be recalled that the party is holding a national convention for the first time after the Supreme Court declared Makarfi the chairman of the party.

Makarfi had been locked in a protracted battle with Ali Modu-Sheriff over the national chairmanship of the party.
