The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said it will henceforth arrest and prosecute private individuals who make illegal use of sirens, escorts, and flashers on the roads.
According to the Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, such illegal use of sirens and others constitute an abuse of freedom of movement.
The Corps Marshal who stressed that only government officials were entitled to use sirens and escorts while on the road, decried the increasing rate at which private persons purchase pick-up trucks and place sirens on them with Escorts.
He sounded a note of warning to those doing that that it was contrary to the FRSC Act.

Oyeyemi said: “Most of these convoys you are seeing are not even government officials, I think it’s an abuse of freedom of movement and there must be a stop to this. Most of them are not entitled to sirens, to put a flash on their vehicles and it is part of the lawlessness we are talking about.
“The regulation is very clear as per those who are entitled to have an escort in the first instance; the FRSC Act is very clear on those who are entitled to use sirens and all these are supposed to be documented.
“So you cannot just buy a vehicle and put a siren with some guys wearing a suit. That is an act of lawlessness and the law does not allow it and we must put a stop to this in 2020.”
He said the FRSC will collaborate with the police to ensure that those arrested were prosecuted and their vehicles impounded as a deterrent to others.
