President Omar Al-Bashir of Sudan has reportedly stepped down after 30 years in power. He came into office in 1989.
There were reports that Al-Bashir and some of his aides were arrested in a military coup.
This follows a series of protests in Khartoum, capital of the country. The protesters had demanded the resignation of the president.
As at the time of filing this report, which is still developing, the BBC said that more crowds were on their way to join the tens of thousands who had been protesting outside the military headquarters since Saturday.

Al-Arabiya TV said the army would soon announce the formation of a transitional council which would be headed by Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf, the first vice-president and defense minister of Sudan.

However, the BBC reports that a respected journalist in the country, Yousra Elbagir said a meeting of Sudan’s top military and security brass was ongoing to discuss who will lead a new transitional High Council of Armed Forces.
According to her, the Sudanese Army’s Chief of General Staff, Lt Gen. Kamal Abdel-Marouf is their top choice to head the transitional council.
The Sudanese Professionals Association, which has spearheaded the protests, meanwhile, said they would only accept the handover of power to a civilian transitional government.
The Sudanese opposition party also said they would reject any changes that didn’t meet the demands of the public, insisting the Sudanese youth have the power to affect change in the country.
Protesters who gathered in front of the military headquarters as military vehicles were deployed on key roads and bridges in Khartoum were reportedly shouting “It has fallen, we won,” according to Reuters.
