The meeting scheduled to hold on Tuesday between the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and the Federal Government over the ongoing strike by lecturers could no longer hold.
The lecturers, led by ASUU president, Biodun Ogunyemi did not attend.
According to a statement by Ogunyemi,
But in statement signed by ASUU president, Biodun Ogunyemi, the lecturers said the meeting which was to hold in Abuja was unnecessary.
According to Ogunyemi, ASUU had done what was required of it, hence the meeting was not important.
His words: “On Thursday 17th August 2017, we met with the Minister of Labour and Education where it was decided that we should consult our members and revert to the government, we have consulted our members and in a letter dated 28th of August, we have written back to the federal government on the outcome of our consultations.”
He added that what was expected of the government was to react to the letter sent to it by the union.
“As we expect the federal government reaction to our letter, we hope it would not be long before we receive a response that would bring lasting solution to the dispute,” he said.
The Next Edition reported earlier that ASUU and the federal government were scheduled to meet today as part of efforts to end the industrial action embarked upon by lecturers.
The lecturers have been on strike since August 13 following alleged failure of the federal government to fulfill its promise to the union as contained in< Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the 2009 FG/ASUU Agreement on financing of state universities.
Some of the promises border on the conditions of service and the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) among others.
In a statement issued by the Deputy Director, Press, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Samuel Olowookere, the meeting was to hold in Abuja.
According to a statement, Ministers of Education and Finance; Chairman, National Income Salaries, and Wages Commission; and the Executive Secretary, National Universities, Commission will be present.
Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU president, will lead members of his union to the meeting.
