Everyone needs cheap and unlimited data. The world is evolving and the internet has changed a lot of things. Accessing the internet is not just for the high profile people anymore as it was before.
Let me take your mind back to the days when sim card was about N30, 000 and only the high profile people could afford it. Now, a sim card goes as low as 150 naira and anybody can afford it. Remember when you had to go to a call centre and pay money to make a call? You would say 20,000 words in a minute because you knew the time was running fast and you would pay a lot for it. Now, most people can afford phones and the internet has been made easy for every class of people to access but the prices of data seems to be increasing every day.
According to the Nigerian Communications commission (NCC), MTN, Glo, Airtel and 9mobile and other mobile operators have about 149.3 million active subscribers and about 92 million of these people are active internet users who depend on data to access websites and social media. But are the telecom providers making it cheap for the masses?
After you have spent more than N20,000 in a month just for your mobile data, you sit down to calculate what you must have actually spent on data for the past years and suddenly you feel you would have been the ‘Dangote’ of your village by now if you didn’t spend that much on mobile data. These days, even parents deprive their kids of certain things because they need to use the money to subscribe to mobile data.
The interesting ones are the social media beggars one every celebrity Instagram page asking for as low as 2,000 naira to feed but they have money to subscribe their mobile data. Worst still, the network providers aren’t even able to provide us with unlimited data.
We need cheap and unlimited data!!!
Almost every Nigerian citizen has more than one sim card for comments of disappointments. Your friend tells you MTN is the best, you run to MTN and they offer you 5GB at 3,500 naira, which is meant to finish in a month, but here is the trick! You never use this data for a month, it uses an ‘Usain Bolt’ speed to disappear from your phone in two weeks or less.
Globacom slashed their data prices “6GB for 2,000 naira, 10GB for 2,500 naira, get 18GB for 4,000 naira For a month!” that’s crazily cheap. But guess what? The moment you subscribe, the network vanishes into thin air. You have to find a particular spot in your house to get a 3G network in every 10 minutes. And by the time you realise the trick, it’s been a month and you have not used up to 600mb of the data. Scam!
Airtel comes with their own advert “We have the cheapest data! It’s unlimited” on radio, TV, social media and everywhere. You think it’s cheap and you rush for it only to realise that the network isn’t as efficient as you thought. Same old story, Another Scam!
Which network provider will be the first to give us UNLIMITED DATA? And by this, we aren’t talking about the unlimited data that the terms and conditions will read “only for Nokia torchlight phones”.
We just need UNLIMITED DATA.
