Benue Re-run: Abdulsalami Abubakar Urges Stakeholders To Embrace Peace

The National Peace Committee under the leadership of General Abdulsalami Abubarkar has called on the people of Benue state to embrace peace during and after the forth coming governorship and State Assembly supplementary election in the state.

The Former Head of State made this call at a Town hall meeting with Benue stakeholders on peaceful supplementary election for the gubernatorial and state house of assembly coming up this Saturday.

The event was organised by the National Peace Committee, NPC, in partnership with the Kukah Centre.

Gen. Abubarkar who spoke through a representative, Mr George Nakanda said with or without elections, there was need for a peaceful Nigeria.

Mr Nakanda, who noted that Nigeria cannot continue to be in the state of anarchy said the National Peace Committee stood for peace and would do everything to ensure that there was peace during and after the election.

Speaking at the town hall meeting, the Benue state Governor, Samuel Ortom expressed gratitude to the Abdulsalami Abubarkar foundation for the move to restore peace in the state and Nigeria at large.

Ortom said the move was a right step in the right direction as peace was sacrosanct in every society and a key towards achieving development.

Ortom who was represented by his deputy, Benson Abounu said the move by the peace committee since the 2015 elections had brought togetherness in Nigeria where those that won and those that lost in 2015 accepted it in good faith.

The governor, therefore called on all political parties, stakeholders to ensure a violence free supplementary election come Saturday March 23, 2019.

The Commissioner of police Benue state Police Command CP Umar Muri represented by CSP Nelson Iorhemba said the peace meeting was a welcome development to ensure a violence free supplementary election.

His said the command has made adequate security arrangements for the presence of security personnel in all the polling units.
