A senator was on Wednesday practically prevented by his colleagues from abandoning the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, for the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Sonni Ogbuoji, representing Ebonyi South, had resolved to defect to the APC and rose to make his declaration on the floor of the Senate.
Citing Order 43, Ogbuoji gave the crisis in the PDP as reason for his intention to defect to APC.
However, midway into his declaration, he was cut short by some of his colleagues in the PDP.
They moved to him and consulted with him for about ten minutes, leaving the Senate in a rowdy situation.
After a while, order was restored and behold, Ogbuoji had changed his mind: He was no longer defecting.
Addressing the session after the consultation, he said he was overwhelmed by the show of love of his people and decided to remain in the PDP.

His words: “When I started, my colleagues from my party said they needed me to consult with them. Because of the love they have shown me I have decided to step down my declaration.”
His decision to “step down” his declaration was applauded by his colleagues from the PDP.
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, reacted over the issue.
“In line with our rules which says there cannot be any further debates on this, his point of order is noted. Senator Sonni Ogbuoji, I will keep the whole day free for you for anytime you want to come back on order 43 today before the close of the session,” he said.
