President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration of June 12 as the nation’s Democracy Day has continued to generate different reactions from individuals and groups across the country.
In the Senate on Thursday, the legislators resolved that the result of the June 12, 1993 presidential election which late politician and businessman, Chief Moshood Abiola, was acclaimed to have won needed to be ascertained.
The Senate therefore called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to release the results of the election.
It would be recalled that while declaring the new Democracy Day, Buhari emphasized the significance of June 12.

June 12, 1993 was the day Nigerians irrespective of their ethnic or religious leanings, voted overwhelmingly for Abiola.
The 1993 election, though declared freest and fairest in the history of Nigeria, was annulled by the military government led by President Ibrahim Babangida.
The struggle for the de-annulment of the country caused a major crisis across the country.
Abiola and several others died in the course of the struggle.
