The House of Representatives on Tuesday resolved to probe the alleged disappearance of $44 million from the treasury of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
The decision was taken following a motion to that effect by Diri Douye (Bayelsa PDP) and adopted by the House.
The House will also probe the appointment of Ahmed Abubakar as the new Director General of the NIA.
Specifically, the House is curious about the citizenship and competence of the new DG, against the backdrop of the controversy raised over his appointment.
Presenting the motion, the legislator said the probe was necessary in view of the nation’s security and reputation of the agency.

“We must bear in mind that the agency represents us not only in Nigeria but in the eyes of the international community.
“So we should immediately look into these matters in a bid to resolve them because if the image we present before other countries remains dented this way, then we are doomed,” he said.
In his contribution to the motion, the legislator representing Aninri/Agwu/Oji-Uzo constituency in Enugu State, Toby Okechukwu, said the scandal involving the alleged disappearance of the money was very embarrassing.
That, he said, was so because of the recent controversy over about N13 billion stashed away in a flat in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Upon the resolution to probe the missing money, the committee to investigate it was given two weeks to report back to the House.
Former DG of NIA, Ambassador Ayo Oke was sacked by President Buhari following a recommendation by a panel of enquiry to that effect.
The panel of enquiry, led by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, indicted Oke in the scandal over the money stashed away in a flat at Osborne Tower, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Abubakar had hardly been appointed than $44 million was alleged to have been moved from the coffers of the NIA.
Also, issues have been raised over the citizenship of the new NIA boss.
