The Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) has urged the Federal Government to ensure the prosecution of former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, over certificate forgery.

Adeosun was indicted over the forgery of her National Youths Service Corps Exemption Certificate and has resigned.

It was gathered that she left the country shortly after her resignation on Friday.

But in a statement by SPN, the right thing for the government to do was to prosecute her.

The party said it had become very common among political office holders to forge certificates and get away with the crime.

“Certificate forgery or claim to have passed through academic institution is not new. The prominent amongst them are Salisu Buhari (the former Speaker of the House of Representatives), Bola Ahmed Tinubu (the former governor of Lagos State), Evans Enwerem (the former Senate President) etc. Many of these allegations get covered up but the government could not sweep Kemigate under the carpet.

“Kemi Adeosun’s claim that it was her associates that procured the fake NYSC certificate is not only spurious but also face-saving. In the first place, she is not qualified for an exemption having graduated at the age of 22. Secondly, certificates such as the NYSC certificates are secured by the person concerned and not procured by proxy or agency,” the party argued.

The party challenged the Buhari-led government to prosecute Kemi Adeosun, Babachir Lawal, Abdulrasheed Maina and several others if it was serious about its fight against corruption.

The statement is signed by Abiodun Bamigboye (Acting National Chairperson) and Chinedu Bosah, (National Secretary).
