The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, winner of the Adamawa state governorship election.

Returning officer for the election, Andrew Haruna, made the declaration at the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC’s office in Yola, the state capital, on Friday morning.

Fintri polled 376,552 votes to defeat the incumbent governor of the state and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Jibrila Bindow, who scored 336,386 votes.

He won with a margin of 40,166.

The Returning officer declared the PDP winner in all the 14 local government areas where Thursday’s supplementary election held.

Recall that the March 9 election in the state had been declared inconclusive because the number of cancelled votes was higher than the margin between the two main contenders and supplementary election fixed for March 23.

However, the governorship candidate of the Movement For Restoration and Defense for Democracy, MRDD, Mustafa Shaba, sued INEC over the absence of his party’s logo on the electoral materials for the March 9 election that was declared inconclusive.

A federal high court in Abuja halted the March 23, supplementary poll which but later asked INEC to proceed with it.

The Adamawa governor-elect was speaker of the state assembly. He served as acting governor when Murtala Nyako was impeached in 2014.
