The government of Akwa Ibom State has announced the closure of 78 unapproved private primary and secondary institutions as well as evening schools in the state.
Also closed are Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) centres across the three senatorial district of the state.
In the same vein, no fewer than 783 other such institutions have been penciled down for closure in the ongoing exercise by the Ministry of Education to purge the system of all illegal and unregistered schools.
A statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Valerie Obot, directed all the proprietors of the affected schools to “regularize the status of their schools with the Ministry of Education.”
According to the statement which was made available on Wednesday the closure took effect from August 31, 2017.
The statement further warned parents to verify the status of the affected schools before registering their wards for 2017/2018 school sessions.
It reads in part: “His Excellency Governor, Udom Gabriel Emmanuel has approved the closure of unapproved nursery, primary, secondary schools in Akwa Ibom state with effect from August 31, 2017
“Consequently, the Honourable Commissioner for Education has directed that the proprietors of the unapproved schools published herein should register and regularize their status with the Ministry of Education before August 31, 2017.”
The statement directed all zonal directors of education across the state to ensure compliance.
