One suspected case of Lassa fever has been reported in Borno State.

This is according to Mr Haruna Mshelia, the Borno State Commissioner for Health.

Mshelia who spoke with journalists on Thursday in Maiduguri said the case was reported in Zabarmari community of Jere local government area of the state.

According to him, the patient was initially quarantined but discharged after medical examinations.

“The patient was discharged after medical examination certified him free of Lassa fever infection.

“It is medically proven that the case was not Lassa fever as earlier suspected,” he said.

The commissioner added that the state government has also made efforts to increase surveillance to prevent the spread of river blindness.

“Assorted drugs are distributed to endemic areas,” he said.

He added that government was also providing free treatment to leprosy and tuberculosis patients.

This, he said, was being carried out in conjunction with development partners.
