Mr. Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor, has described the appointment of Nigeria’s former Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as member of South African Economic Advisory Council, as well deserving.

Obi, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Vice Presidential candidate in the 2019 election, also said the recent appointment of the former World Bank Managing Director, was highly rewarding.

Obi, in a statement by his Media Adviser, Valentine Obienyem, made available to The NEXT EDITION in Lagos, said by the appointment, South Africa had picked an experienced and committed economic manager.

The former governor said that by the choice of Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, South Africa had put a square peg in a square hole in the restoration of her troubled economy.

Obi recalled how Okonjo-Iweala’s effort to save Nigerian economy for the future came to nought when the Nigerian Governors’ Forum refused her patriotic advice to save the huge sum in excess crude account “in our Sovereign Wealth Fund for the rainy day and future of children.

“She was vehemently opposed and the forum even went to court to force her to share the money. We called her names then, but look at the deteriorating situation we found ourselves today.”

Congratulating Okonjo-Iweala for her landmark appointment, Obi described her as “an exceptional personality and first class ambassador of our country Nigeria and one whose commitment to a better society remains outstanding.”

The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, whose country’s economy had been facing recession, appointed the former Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Economy as member of a powerful advisory team to turn around his nation’s dwindling economy.
