The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) are to begin a nationwide strike on May 15 due to unresolved demands.
This is contained in a circular addressed to all branch Chairmen and jointly signed by Mr Peters Adeyemi, NASU General Secretary, and Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU President, issued on Thursday in Abuja.
The unions under the aegis of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU said the decision followed a meeting with the Minister of Education and other government officials over unresolved demands.
“In view of this, we hereby direct our members to commence total and comprehensive strike in all universities and inter-university centres from 12 a.m. on May 15, 2026.
“All NASU and SSANU members are enjoined to comply with this directive for the survival of our existence in the system.
“National Monitoring Teams have been set up by the JAC to ensure effective compliance with the strike,” the unions statement said.
They expressed concern over the slow pace of renegotiating the 2009 agreements for non-teaching staff and also rejected the 30 per cent CONTTA award, describing it as inadequate to address members’ concerns.
The unions also said that although government had withdrawn the 30 per cent offer and that no fresh proposal or timeline for concluding negotiations was presented.
They noted that members had mandated the leadership to insist on full approval of all demands before suspending any strike.
The unions warned that any branch violating the directive would face sanctions, adding that monitoring teams would ensure total compliance.
They urged members to remain united, describing the strike as necessary for their survival in the university system.
