Amina Abdullahi-Sani, Kano State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs, has reaffirmed commitment to advancing women’s representation in governance.
This is contained in a statement on Saturday by the ministry’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Bintu Nuhu-Yakasai.
Sani spoke while receiving a delegation from International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), led by Salma Ahmad-Danbappha.
Also in attendance was Ibrahim Bello, Coordinator of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RoLAC).
The Commissioner emphasised the need to realise reserved seats for women in legislative bodies.
She said increasing women’s participation in governance was vital for inclusive and sustainable development.
“We will continue engaging the state government and House of Assembly to realise reserved seats for women,” she said.
Sani reaffirmed commitment to effective implementation of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law in the state.
“Enforcement remains a priority due to its role in protecting citizens’ rights and dignity,” she added.
On rehabilitation, she disclosed plans to accommodate female drug dependents at the Gaya Reformatory Centre in spite of ongoing renovations.
She expressed concern over rising substance abuse among women.
“The temporary facility at Goron Dutse Remand Home is inadequate for effective rehabilitation,” she noted.
Sani pledged intensified efforts toward full implementation of the Child Protection Law to safeguard children.
She also revealed plans to begin a diversion programme addressing social challenges affecting children and communities.
“The initiative will start at a temporary facility in Shagari Quarters pending completion of a permanent centre at Gyadi Gyadi,” she said.
The commissioner commended Gov. Abba Yusuf for supporting initiatives improving lives of women and vulnerable groups.
FIDA and RoLAC representatives pledged support for programmes focused on empowering women and protecting vulnerable populations.
