The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Thursday, met with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, over the crisis between the Nigeria Army and the Indigenous People of Biafra in Abia State and some parts of Rivers State.
The meeting which held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, lasted about one hour.
Speaking to journalists, shortly after the meeting, Idris said the meeting was to discuss ways of ensuring safety of lives and property in the country.
He explained that there were plans to deploy policemen to all the parts of the country and discuss with political leaders on how to quell the tension in the South East of the country.
According to him, state governors where being involved in the process of ensuring calmness across the nation.
“One, is to deploy policemen across the country, two, we are in touch with the state government, trying to mobilize the political leadership to be able to intervene where necessary on how to lessen the tension in the South-East,” he said as he explained parts of the plans to ensure security.
Recall that there has been a growing tension in the South East lately, a situation which informed the deployment of troops.
Also, the clash between members of the Nnamdi Kanu led IPOB informed the dusk to dawn curfew imposed on Aba, Abia State by the governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.
Meanwhile the police boss has decried the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, for alleging that policemen were involved in armed robbery.
Wike was reported to have said the killing of a SARS officer during a failed kidnap operation on confirmed that policemen were involved in armed robbery and kidnapping.
Reacting on the issue, he said Wike’s statement was generalisation and did not make sense.
“I just want you to read between the lines. If you have leaders making sweeping allegations obviously it does not make sense.”
He said much as the governor had the right to express himself, he should be circumspect.
“If a policeman was killed will you say he was involved in crime? I think you are mixing two different issues. A policeman was killed in Rivers in connection with this IPOB issue, is different from saying policemen are involved in crime. You cannot say someone that was attacked and killed is the one involved in crime,” he said.
