Gunmen suspected to be bandits operating in the rural communities have abducted six members of the Ayetoro-Kiri community of Kaba-Bunu local government of Kogi state.
The Guardian gathered that one Enoch Johnson, a timber contractor, Elder Maiye, who works as a security guard at the community secondary school, a young girl, Dupe Oshe, Kehinde Lot, and Tope Olorunshe, are among the victims.
The incident reportedly happened Thursday afternoon, in broad daylight, when the gunmen riding on motorcycles invaded the community.
The gunmen first attack a phone shop and cart away more than 50 mobile phones in a chaotic manner shooting guns sporadically.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen held the community to ransom for an hour operating at will while residents scampered for safety.
“The invasion of the Ayetoro-Kiri community has been one too many,” said a resident, Sunday Taiwo.
Our correspondent gathered that the kidnappers have not made contact with the victims’ families as of the time of this report.
The rising wave of insecurity in Bunu District of the local government has become a source of concern for the locals, who are calling on security agencies, the state government, and relevant authorities to take urgent steps to reduce the activities of the bandits in the area.
The National President of the Aiyetoro-Kiri Development Association, Engr. Tolufashe Olusegun, described the ugly incident as one too many, pointing out that the people of Bunu land can no longer access their farmland and those in the community are moving around with fear.
He called on relevant security agencies and the government to intervene to rescue the kidnapped victims and also upscale the security architecture of the entire area.
Meanwhile, the Kogi State Police Command could not be reached as the spokesperson SP William Ovye did not respond to calls.
