An organisation committed to ensuring increase in the pace of justice delivery through technology, Gavel, has called on the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, to probe the alleged atrocities of security agents, particularly, the police.
This, it said, should be with the intention of ensuring that sanity returned to the country and the rights of every individual were respected.
In a letter signed by its official, Nelson Olanipekun, dated February 15, 2018, and sent to the NHRC to that effect, it called for a probe panel across the country.
Gavel added that it made the call on the NHRC in recognition of its responsibility to protect human rights in Nigeria.
It said it was also in recognition of the NHRC’s responsibility to investigate human rights abuses and prosecute persons found wanting.
Gavel said the call became necessary in view of the continued violation of the rights of the Nigerian people despite the said reform of the Nigeria Police Force as a result of the recent public outcry through #EndSARS and #ReformPoliceNG.
“In the heat of the protests, the Police leadership has announced some reforms in the structure of the SARS hierarchy but this seems not to have made sufficient impact.
“Nigerians still cry out daily because of the extortion allegedly perpetrated by SARS personnel,” Gavel said.
