A military court martial which sat in Abuja has found former Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, a military operation prosecuting war against Boko Haram in the Northeast,  Major Gen. Olusegun Adeniyi guilty of violating the military guidelines on social media.

He is to be demoted by at least three years.

The verdict is coming about eight months after a video went viral on social media showing General Adeniyi complaining about a lack of weapons to prosecute the war against Boko Haram and alleging sabotage within the army.

He was summarily suspended from work by the Nigerian Army, which subsequently filed charges of military social media guideline violations against him.

His aide, Private Tokunbo Obanla who was prosecuted along with him and was found to have leaked the recording is to serve 28 days in jail with hard labour, according to the military court.

Adeniyi had strongly denied any wrongdoings, saying that he did not leak the video, and that his phone was in Obanla’s custody at the time of the incident.

Obanla in his statement allegedly admitted to posting the video on social media in error.

Meanwhile, Adeniyi’s lawyers have said they will appeal the judgement of the court martial.
