The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Benue State Sector Command, has partnered the Joseph Saawuan Tarka University of Agriculture, Makurdi (JOSTUM), Tricycle and Motorcycle riders and Bus town service unions to bring to a stop the incessant Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) recorded in the state particularly, at the university junction.

The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Yakubu Mohammad, who spoke at a combine rally organised for commercial motorcycle riders, tricycle and bus town service providers operating at the junction said the university junction, at North Bank area of Makurdi, has become notorious for accident.

He lamented that the junction has claimed the lives of numerous undergraduate students and other citizens who are killed as a result of road traffic crashes.

Mohammad said he was pained with the number of road traffic crashes recorded at the junction with attendant loss of lives especially to undergraduate students studying at the University resulting from the carelessness and total disregard to traffic rules by the commercial motorcycle, Tricycle riders and drivers of the bus town service operating at the junction while commuting to the University.

The Sector Commander who met with the Vice Chancellor advised the University management to regulate the activities of commercial motorcycle riders operating fromthe junction to the university community through the adoption and use of an approved coded reflective jackets which would offer security both to the student and members of staff of the University.

He further added that any rider operating in the University should have a registration number fixed to his Motorcycle.

The Sector Commander warned operators of motorcycle and tricycles at the University junction to desist from speeding, overloading and outright refusal on the use of registration number and total disregard to safety.

He warned that the Command is ready to arrest anyone found violating traffic rules.

He assured members of the public that the Command would not rest on it’s oars at ensuring that road discipline is entrenched at the junction and Benue State at large.

The Sector Commander further gave assurance to the public that the Command would promptly respond to any rescue operations saying its doors are wide open to partnership with all stakeholders at ensuring safety in Benue state.

The Branch Chairmen of Benue Tricycle Association (BENTA) Benue Motorcycle Association (BEMOA) and National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) promised to partner with the Command to bring traffic infractions and road traffic crashes at the junction to an end at this Ember Months and beyond.
