A frontline businesman in Delta state, Mr. George Owarieta, has said that failure to implement Vision 2020 was responsible for poor economic indices as well as the stunted growth in Nigeria.

Mr. Owarieta who spoke to our Correspondent at the weekend in Asaba, said that vision 2020 would have placed Nigeria on a pedestal of economic growth with countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and South Korea, if it was followed through.

He noted that it was President Olusegun Obasanjo who introduced the vision 2020 plan aimed at bringing Nigeria into the group of best global economies by 2020, adding that late President Umaru Yar’ Adua added impetus by launching it in 2009.

He said after those initiatives, nothing else was done to implement the the plan, saying if that was done the programme would have turned around the economy of the country for the benefit of all.

He said “it was the expectation of Nigerians that by this year 2020, Nigeria will have a large, strong diversified, sustainable and competitive economy that will effectively harness the talents an energized its people and exploit its natural endowment to guarantee a high standards of living for Nigerians.”

“All those who are mouthing roadblocks to extort others, should know that come another 50 years, Nigeria will remain stagnant, we are only lucky to be surviving now as a nation.”
