The Enugu State government has condemned the five-day warning strike embarked upon by resident doctors in Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH).
The government through a statement by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Dr. Ifeanyi Agujiobi, described the action as an act of sabotage, warning that any death or complications arising from “this unlawful action at ESUTH Parklane Hospital would be dealt with.”
The statement also described the strike as “ill-timed, malicious, condemnable and not done in good faith.”
It read further: “It contradicts the creed of the Hippocratic Oath, which they swore to uphold. The striking resident doctors know of patients referred for further treatments after an outreach by an American NGO, but are now left unattended to because of this unreasonable action.

“It is worrisome to note the fact that this action is coming at a time the country is battling the challenge of new coronavirus outbreak.
It is expected that a notice of the purported strike should have been given at least 24 hours or more; this was not done and it this runs contrary to labour laws on strike.
“Worse, all key officials of Parklane Hospital have remained incommunicado.
“The government does not owe any of the doctors and they are comparatively well cared for.”
