As Nigeria marks 27 years of uninterrupted democracy, the Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to democratic governance, national unity and tackling challenges facing the country.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, restated this in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday to mark the democracy day Juma’at service.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the national prayer was part of activities marking the 27th Democracy Day Anniversary, which occurs every June 12.
The Vice President Kashim Shettima led the federal government delegation at the Juma’at service held at the National Mosque, Abuja, which was also attended by the minister and other dignitaries.
“This solemn Juma’at service reminds us that Nigeria’s progress, unity and stability require not only good governance but also the prayers, support and active participation of all citizens.
“As we commemorate Democracy Day, we reflect on the sacrifices of our heroes, especially Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose courage, resilience and commitment to the will of the people remain enduring symbols of Nigeria’s democratic journey,” Idris said.
According to the minister, Democracy Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the strength of the nation’s democratic institutions and the collective commitment of Nigerians to constitutional rule.
He said 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance testified to the resilience of the nation’s democracy and the determination of people to uphold democratic values.
“Under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity and addressing the challenges confronting our nation.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to unity, peaceful co-existence and responsible citizenship,” the minister said.
According to him, Nigeria’s strength lies in the nation’s diversity, and it’s future depends on the ability to work together in the interest of the country.
“Let us continue to reject division, embrace dialogue and promote values that strengthen our democracy and foster national cohesion.
“Together, we can build a stronger, more prosperous and united Nigeria for present and future generations.
“May God Almighty continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria, guide our leaders, protect our security personnel, and grant our nation enduring peace, unity and prosperity,” he said.
