The Delta state Government on Friday threatened to sack the contractors handling the 1.5km Kwale/ Beneku bridge, Asaba Ughelli Highway if at the end of the second quarter the projects are not completed.
The contractors (names withheld) had told the state government that the slow pace of work was informed by the COVID-19 Pandemic ravaging the world, but the state government in a swift reaction through the state Commissioner for Works, Mr. James Auguoye, said that the contractors’ excuses were ruse and frivolous.
Mr. Auguoye said in reaction to the contractors explanations that the projects must be completed according to specifications contained in the contract documents.
Speaking further, Mr. Auguoye, however, charged the contractors working on the two pedestrian bridges along the Benin/ Asaba Expressway and the section C portion of Ughelli/ Asaba road to expedite actions with a view to completing the projects on time.
The Commissioner who spoke to Journalists on the site Ughelli/ Asaba Expressway, expressed satisfaction at the quality of the work even though at slow pace, adding that the state Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who inspected the projects a few weeks ago, would be astonished at the quality of works being carried out by the contractors.

Mr. Auguoye stressed the socio economic importance of the projects, especially as it crosses Ase Creek to affected Council areas and the state in general, adding that inspite of the rampaging impact of COVID-19 on the health and socio economic sectors, the Governor can still substain ongoing projects to strengthen the state’s economic.
He also expressed enthusiasm over the benefits of the two pedestrian bridges at the Summit Junction and Abraka market Junction along the Benin Asaba Expressway.
At 25km road/ bridge project at the GSM Company Asaba axis, the Commissioner said that the ongoing extensive Culvert project, would curb the devastating impacts of the Iyi ABI induced flooding along the busy road and in the populated residential areas beside Asaba Airport when Completed.
The Commissioner assured that when completed, Deltans will continue to enjoy the dividends of good governance as provided by Okowa-led administration.
