Breast cancer has been identified as the commonest cancer that affects women worldwide. It is also believed to be second to cancer of the cervix in Nigeria.
A medical doctor with the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Makurdi, Dr. Chisa Ugboaja disclosed this during a three day seminar on Breast self examination tutorials, demonstration and free mammogram organized for Benue women at the General Hospital, North Bank, Makurdi.
She therefore advised women from ages 20 and above to periodically conduct self examination of their breasts to help them detect early and fend off possible cases of cancer.
Dr Ugboaja said self examination by all women is critical against the backdrop of rising cases of breast cancers among women in Nigeria.
Speaking to the women, Ugboaja demonstrated how women can conduct self examination on their breasts unaided, saying the method was simple and easy.

She further advised that where a lump is detected such a person should quickly seek medical help early enough to prevent cancer cells from spreading into other parts of the body.
She said men can also contact breast cancer, though in rare cases, but that women should be more proactive.
While breast cancer appears to be on the rise, Dr Ugboaja, in her presentation said most women do not have the right information and knowledge on what to do.
Some of the women who participated at the seminar, said the lecture was an eye opener and called on other women to do regular breast checks for early detection and treatment.
