The Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency says four million people would be vaccinated against Yellow Fever in 19 local government areas (LGA) of the state.
The Chairman of the agency, Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Bauchi.
Mohammed said that the exercise would begin in January 2021 as a preventive measure against outbreak of the disease.
“With support from the Federal Government, Bauchi State will conduct mass vaccination targeting persons from age one year to 44 years in 19 LGA.
“Bauchi State has 20 LGA, In 2019, the people of Alkaleri LGA were massively vaccinated, and aerial and indoor residual sprays were also carried out.
“This exercise was conducted in November 2019 to kill the vectors because bush animals are a reservoir of the disease.

“That is the reason Alkaleri will not be part of the January exercise,” he said.
According to Mohammed, the agency has been proactive in surveillance and rapid response, hence only Ganjuwa LGA has recorded cases of yellow fever.
“In 2019, six LGAs were affected with cases of yellow fever but in 2020, only one LGA, which is Ganjuwa LGA was affected,” he said.
He stressed that yellow fever could be prevented and called on mothers to ensure that their babies completed their doses of routine immunisation.
Mohammed advised the general public to ensure the use of mosquito nets and to maintain environmental hygiene.
