The Presidency has been condemned by prominent Nigerians over the attacks on the leadership of the National Assembly, particularly Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.
Earlier in the day, some policemen had laid siege to the residences of both Saraki and Ekweremadu, preventing them from moving.
Saraki however found his way to the National Assembly despite the siege and presided over the plenary where no fewer than 15 Senators announced their defection from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
In their different tweets, former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili; Senator Ben Murray Bruce and former aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, condemned the show of force by the police on the lawmakers.
Ezekwesili tweets: “If the @SPNigeria @bukolasaraki has a case to answer and @PoliceNG issued an invitation to him already as should be the right compliance with the Rule of Law, why then roll out the Police Force on the STREETS against him? I am not getting it, @NGRPressident @Mbuhari. Why??”
In another instance, she tweeted: “What is the @iamekweremadu the Deputy @SPNigeria Senate President’s angle in the UNDEMOCRATIC DRAMA unfolding at the Senate with the IG @PoliceNG as Lead Actor, please?
“What is his own offence? @NGRPresident @Mbuahri SPEAK.”

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce in his own reaction tweeted: “The siege and any use of force on @BukolaSaraki, the legitimate Senate President or Ike Ekweremadu, his Deputy are an act of desperation. #IstanadWithSaraki and I urge you to do the same. If we allow what is currently being done to them to stand, we are in full blown dictatorship!”
Omokri’s tweet reads: “What is happening to @bukolasaraki is an act of tyranny by a leadership afraid of its own shadows. You can’t lay seige to the nation’s number 3 citizen as if he is a common criminal just to frustrate the suspected defection of people whose defection from PDP you celebrated!”
Another aggrieved person, Eromo Egbujule, tweeted: “Anyone shocked by the presidency’s hounding of Bukola Saraki & Ike Ekweremadu clearly never heard of (or has forgotten) the Umaru Dikko affair exactly 34 years ago this month.
“Buhari ordered the kidnap of a citizen on foreign soil, so what is ordering arrest in his own backyard?”
