Alleged Rape: Court Remands Student Pending DPP Advice

A Magistrates’ Court in Makurdi on Thursday, ordered that a 29-year-old student, Orduen Gbanyam, who allegedly raped a 17-year old girl, be remanded in prison pending legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecution.

Gbanyam, who lives in Phase 1, Owner Occupier Quarters, Makurdi, is charged with rape and trespass.

Magistrate Regina Ochokwunu, who did not take the plea of the defendant because her court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

She adjourned the matter to March 20, for further mention.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Regina Ishaya said that the case was received at the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department from the Divisional Police Headquarter, ‘E’ Division, Makurdi via a letter dated Feb. 13.

She said one Moses Ver also of Owner Occupier, Makurdi reported the matter on Feb 11.

Ishaya said that the complainant told the police that the defendant raped his sister in his house.

The prosecutor said that the defendant was arrested after police investigation.

He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 350 and 284 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue, 2004.
