The suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen has resigned as the topmost judicial officer in the country with immediate effect.
According to TheCable the suspended CJN turned in his resignation letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday evening, a day after the National Judicial Council, NJC, recommended that he be compulsorily retired for misconduct.
Recall that the National Judicial Council, NJC, on Wednesday, said it has forwarded the outcome of its investigation into corruption allegations against the suspended CJN, President Muhammadu Buhari, for action.
It was discovered that the Council had recommended the immediate retirement of the CJN who is standing trial in a six count charge of false declaration of assets at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Onnoghen’s travails began in January when he was suspended by the President based on an order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT shortly before the commencement of the 2019 general elections.
A civil society group, Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative, ARDI, had filed a petition against him at the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, over alleged false declaration of assets.
The CJN is currently standing trial at the CCT in a six-count charge of false declaration of asset.
He had filed a no case submission at the end of the prosecution’s case but the tribunal held that he had a case to answer.
