One of the five men facing trial over alleged importation of guns into the country, Mahmud Hassan, said they paid N1 million to security agents to bring in the guns through Apapa Port in Lagos.
661 pump-action rifles were illegally brought into the country from Turkey by the accused last year.
“I gave N1m to facilitate the moving of the container out of the port, but it is not because of the guns.
“The examiners were given N200,000; C.I.O., N100,000; enforcement, N200,000; police, SSS, between N20,000, N25,000, and N30,000; the toll gates, N200,000, exit gate, N20,000, and final gate, N50,000,” he said.
The claims were made in a video played in court on Monday.
It was said to have been recorded while Hassan was giving his statement when he was with the Department of State Services (DSS).
The video was played following the order of the presiding judge, Ayokunle Faji, after Hassan’s lawyer, Yakubu Galadima, said the statement was made under duress.
Others facing trial along with Hassan are Oscar Okafor, Donatus Achinulo, Matthew Okoye and Salihu Danjuma.
Mathew Okoye is however said to be on the run.
