The Federal Government says 67% of inmates in Nigerian correctional facilities are awaiting trial.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Thursday during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television.
He noted that about 72% of inmates are state offenders, but the Federal Government bears the cost of their upkeep.
Tunji-Ojo called for stronger collaboration between federal and state governments to decongest prisons and improve conditions.
He said the Tinubu administration is focused on delivering results, recalling that 4,550 inmates were released in July after a review of minor and prolonged cases.
Despite poor conditions in 2023, he said significant resources have been invested in prison improvements over the last two years.
