Mr. Isah Abubakar, National President, Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), has said that the zoning of presidency in 2023 will give Nigerians a sense of belonging.
Abubakar maintained that jettisoning the zoning formular would bring disunity, saying that political parties had always practised zoning in the past.
He said that zoning would settle the issue of marginalisation.
The northern youth leader in an interview with journalists, stressed that for a rational person, zoning might not be ideal, but for the sake of peace and equity, it should be justified to have a rotational presidency.
He said: “We know that leadership in the country benefits the leaders, members of their families and their cronies, but zoning gives a sense of belonging and inclusion.
“We are all Nigerians and the resources must be utilised for the development of the entire country, but unfortunately, we see leaders bring their friends from all different parts of the country to benefit, and sometimes to the detriment of the entire Nigerians.
“Zoning might not really be a perfect system but we have to adopt it for the sake of a sense of belonging and unity.”

While faulting those who said that competence should be used instead of zoning, Abubakar said: “Nigeria is not ready for the kind of leadership that Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Ahmadu Bello, gave.
“The present leaders are selfish. I believe that governance should be rotational so that every region would have a stake and nobody would feel marginalised although we still have cases where even the natives of madras have complained of marginalisation.
He said that marginalisation was a term people used to bring power to their regions. He pointed out that even in the home town of President Muhammadu Buhari natives are still suffering.
“People are suffering in Daura, there is insecurity in Daura even though the president is from there. People taking up leadership must understand that leadership is about service to Nigerians,” he said.
