As campaign activities increase ahead of 2019 general elections, Commissioner of Police in Benue state, Ene Okon has warned politicians and their supporters alike to desist from destroying bill boards, posters and other campaign materials belonging to their opposing parties.
The Commissioner gave this warning while speaking to news men in his office at the command headquarters in Makurdi.
He was reacting to the destruction of political bill boards, posters and banners in Tarka local government area of Benue state by some members of opposition party recently.
Okon said such acts could undermine the relative peace in the state, warning that all those involved in such activities should desist from it, as anyone caught would be arrested and prosecuted.
“It has come to my knowledge that posters and campaign bill boards are being destroyed by opposing parties. I must warn that this command will not tolerate that from any party,” he said.
The state police boss disclosed that all the divisions have been put on red alert to keep vigilance on the political bill boards, posters from being destroyed but reiterated that where it is noticed, the police will go after the leaders of such political parties no matter how highly placed.

“If you are highly placed in the society, conduct yourself according to the dictate of your office or position. Do not create more problems in the society,” he added.
Ha advised party leaders not to use their position to instigate violence or destruction of campaign properties of the opposition during this festive season and electioneering period.
While assuring the people of Benue of adequate protection of life and property during the festive season, CP Ene Okon said the command has continually raided “black spots” and all those arrested with illegal and prohibited substances would be prosecuted to enable people go about safely, and conduct their lawful businesses.
He then called on the public to assist the command with useful information to fight crime and keep the society safe.
