There was confusion at the Zenith bank vicinity along Oron Road, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State as a 4-man robbery gang attacked the bank’s customer.
The robbers carted away an undisclosed amount of money just withdrawn from the bank.
The customer whose true identity is not known as at press time had already withdrawn large sum of money and was about driving home when the hoodlums ambushed him in front of the bank premises.
The incident happened at about 3 p.m. on Wednesday when the robbers, driving in a Toyota ash colour car pulled-off in front of the man’s car with registration number AKU 224 EJ and shot into the air to scare away those around.
An eye witness told the Next Edition that the robbers after scaring away the crowd shot and shattered the side screen of the car.
They were said to have also deflected the front tyre, thus making it skid off the road.
“I was just inside my shop when I heard a gunshot in front of the bank and I ran out with my boy to see what was happening.
“The armed robbers shot the front tyre and the car dragged from a distance into a ditch, after that they came out from their car and ordered him to open his booth or risk being wasted.
“The man had no option than to obey them, he opened the booth from inside the car and I saw them packing the money into their own car; two of them wore masks,” the source which did not want to be mentioned said.
When our correspondent visited the scene few minutes later the police had cordoned off the place, barring people from taking pictures.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chukwu Ikechukwu, in the state, confirmed the robbery incident.
He said the police were already on duty to track the robbers.
“The DPO has just briefed me about the incident, what we did was to call all the patrol team to cordon off all the roads in Uyo. That is what the patrol team are doing right now. Nobody for now has been arrested.
“The police actually had a gun battle with the armed robbers, we are still trailing them and we will get them,” he assured.
