The Delta State Commissioner for Information, Patrick Ukah, has called on civil engineers to embrace new trends in their profession and avoid delivering substandard projects.
Mr. Ukaah made the call at a retreat organised for civil engineers in the state ministry of works in Warri on Monday.
The commissioner insisted the performance of the engineers was key to the success of the state government especially through the construction of quality roads that would stand the test of time.
Mr. Ukah urged them to support the government in its effort to develop the state, saying they do not need to belong to a political party to do the right thing.
He also proposed for an award to be given to the best performing engineer in the state, stressing it would go a long way to spur their colleagues to be committed and put in their best.
For his part, the state Commissioner for Works, James Augoye, said the era of compromise on road construction has passed and urged the engineers in the ministry to be committed to offering quality jobs.
Mr. Augoye said any engineer involved in delivering shoddy jobs would be held accountable adding that it is shameful that roads just constructed failed months after being commissioned.
Some of the participants who spoke during an interactive session commended the state government for initiating the programme.
They, however, said the essence of the retreat would be defeated if government if the government fails to protect them when they come under pressure from contractors to compromise standard.
