Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has been arrested by the police over the snatching of the mace of the Senate on Wednesday.
The lawmaker had earlier in the day led some suspected thugs into the Senate chamber and snatched the mace which is the symbol of power of the Legislature.
The thugs went away with the mace and the whereabouts is not yet known.
Omo-Agege was arrested by the police at about 2.00 p.m. after the Senate had adjourned sitting.
The Senator who returned to the chamber about an hour after the mace had been taken away could not be arrested immediately because of the immunity he enjoyed as a senator in the chamber.

But shortly after the session, he was whisked away by some policemen in a Sports Utility Vehicle, SUV.
The Senator is likely to be charged for treason going by the statement of the Senate on the matter.
The Senate had accused him of committing treason by snatching the mace.
It described the action of the legislator as an attempt to overthrow an arm of the government.
In a statement by the spokesperson of the Senate, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Senate called on security agencies to help retrieve the mace, just as it vowed to get to the root of the matter.
