All ports in India’s Gujarat state have been put on high alert on the basis of intelligence reports that Pakistani-trained commandos are planning to create sectarian disturbances or stage an attack.
Security has been tightened in the western state, which borders Pakistan, following a warning by India’s Coast Guard and intelligence agencies, Gujarat port officials told broadcaster NDTV.
Intelligence reports indicated “that Pakistan-trained commandos have entered the Gulf of Kutch through the Harami Nala creek area, they are believed to be trained with underwater attacks,’’ according to a security advisory from a port operator, Adani Ports.
The commandos could be from the Pakistani armed forces or from militant groups New Delhi says and are trained by Pakistani forces to carry out attacks in India, NDTV reported.
New Delhi’s move, earlier this month to end the semi-autonomous status of India-administered Kashmir, led to an escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan.
The two countries have previously fought two wars over the Himalayan region.
Both Pakistan and India control parts of Kashmir, but each lays claim to the entire region since the countries gained independence from Britain in 1947.
