The results of the governorship elections held in 29 states of the Federation on March 9, 2019 are all in.
Going by the declarations of the Independent National Electoral Commission, the contest was between the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, except in Imo state where the Action Alliance had a strong showing, coming second after the PDP.
Out of 22 states declared by the electoral umpire, APC won in 13 states while the PDP won nine.
As has been the pattern in the country, APC proved its popularity and dominance in the Northern parts while PDP maintained its stronghold in the Southern parts.
However, in apparent reversal of fortunes, the PDP lost Gombe, the only state in its control in the North East Zone to the APC but snatched Oyo from the ruling party.
Meanwhile, INEC declared the elections in five states inconclusive. The affected states were Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Plateau and Sokoto and suspended the governorship elections in Kano and Rivers states.
In most of the states, the reason for the decision of inclusiveness has been the margin of lead between the winner and the first runner up.
Interestingly, from the results announced by the various returning officers of the states declared inclusive, the PDP is in the lead.
According to INEC re-runs will hold within the next 21 days.
