The strike was called off on Monday in Abuja after a meeting with representatives of the federal government led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

Lecturers have therefore been directed to resume work on Tuesday.

The strike, according to ASUU, was called off till October to enable the federal government fulfill its promises.

At the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the two parties – government and ASUU.

It would be recalled that university lecturers commenced the strike on August 13 in protest of the failure of government to carry out the agreement it reached with them in 2009.

Among other things, ASUU demanded the government to pay the lecturers their allowances and increase the funding of the schools.

The lecturers also demanded the payment of their academic allowance and make universities staff school to be funded by the government.
