The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has de-listed 37 secondary schools in Benue State as examination centres over alleged examination malpractices.
The Commissioner for Education in the State, Dennis Ityavyar who disclosed this while speaking to journalists in his office in Makurdi, said the 37 schools will no longer be centers for the Senior School Certificate of Education (SSCE) and National Examination Council (NECO) examination.
According to him, about 164 schools in the state were observed to be involved in one form of malpractice or the other, but the 37 that were de-listed were the schools that were neck deep in malpractice.

Prof. Ityavyar who explained that the state would sanction 38 principals in connection with the incidences said the ministry has concluded plans to demote the Principals of the affected schools as part of measures to ensure sanity in the system.
Prof. Ityavyar noted that even though the 38th school was not de-listed, the examination body identified some sharp practices in the school, hence the decision of government to sanction the 37 principals of the school, to serve as a deterrent to others, adding that henceforth anyone identified to be involved in any sharp practices would get an outright sack.
The Commissioner also noted that government has put in place modalities to restore order in the education system in the state and would not spare anyone that toys with it.
He further noted that government has closed down over 2,000 mushroom schools in the state to ensure that schools offering education in Benue are started on a solid foundation.
