The search for the 14th Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan has begun.
This follows a call for applications made public via an “Internal/External Advertisement, Appointment of the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan,” by the university’s Registrar, Ganiyu Saliu, published on Thursday.
The public notice indicated that the post of Vice-Chancellor of the premier university would become vacant on November 1, 2026.
The Governing Council of the university, at its meeting on March 4, 2026, proclaimed the commencement of the process of appointing the next substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university.
The incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, had in October 2021 emerged after a five-year non-renewable tenure following a long process ridden with tension and controversy.
The post of Vice-Chancellor had then become vacant on December 1, 2020, but the process was aborted owing to several agitations that led to the dissolution of the governing council at the time.
A new Governing Council led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun was inaugurated in April 2021 to restart the process until the outgoing Adebowale was announced VC on October 14, 2021.
The call for applications mandates that candidates for the post of VC must not be more than 65 years old as of the date of possible assumption of duty on November 1, 2026; be highly distinguished scholars of the rank of professor with a minimum of 10 years’ experience at that level; and demonstrate the ability to provide academic and administrative leadership.
The notice adds, “The candidate must be a person of proven integrity; command the respect of the national and international academic communities through his/her track record; strengthen the bridges between staff, students and other members of the university community.
“The candidate must be a person with a clear vision for the development of the university, enjoy excellent physical and mental health, and attract the much-needed funds into the university.”
