The International Press Centre (IPC) has called for more investments in women for democracy, press freedom, and inclusive leadership as the world marks International Women’s Day (IWD).
The Programme Officer of IPC, Melody Akinjiyan made the call on Sunday in a statement obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in commemoration of the IWD 2026.
The day is commemorated annually on March 8, to celebrate the achievements of women globally.
The theme of this year’s IWD celebration is “Give to Gain.”
IPC stressed the importance of supporting women through affirmative action; expanding opportunities for women in leadership and decision-making.
It further stated that ensuring press freedom and media spaces that were safe and inclusive for female journalists were critical steps towards achieving gender equity.
“When we give women the space, support, and opportunity to lead, societies gain stronger democracies; more vibrant media ecosystems; and more inclusive development outcomes,” the statement said.
IPC demanded for the passage of bill for special seats for women; adoption of 35 per cent affirmative action by all political parties; and reforms to promote empowerment for women.
IPC also demanded for improved working environment and conditions for female journalists; as well as more opportunities for women in leadership positions in the media.
It further called on the media to give adequate and insightful coverage to issues of women and the girl child.
IPC reiterated its commitment to advancing initiatives that promoted gender equity in the media and democratic governance.
