The Lagos State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Mojisola Meranda, has announced the chairpersons for its standing committees.

During a plenary session on Monday, Speaker Meranda revealed the lawmakers who will lead the various committees. The appointed chairpersons are:

Hon. Temitope Adewale – Business and Rules Committee

Hon. Richard Kasumu – Legislative Compliance Committee

Hon. Setonji David – Ethics, Protocol, and Privileges Committee

Hon. Surajudeen Tijani – House Services Committee

Hon. Stephen Ogundipe – Information, Strategy, and Security Committee

Meanwhile, reports indicate that allies of the former Speaker of the Lagos Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, are working to remove Meranda from her position.

Despite multiple failed attempts to oust her since she took office on January 13, 2025, there are renewed efforts to reinstate Obasa as Speaker.

According to sources who spoke with Vanguard, there is speculation that Meranda could be removed soon. The latest plan reportedly involves electing a lawmaker from Lagos West, preferably from Ikeja, since the Ifako-Ijaiye candidate declined the offer. Some lawmakers have also reaffirmed their loyalty to Meranda, making the plot more challenging.

Reports suggest that certain All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders, who support Obasa, are working on a strategy to install a proxy Speaker from the Ikeja constituency. Under this plan, the new Speaker would step down after a few weeks, allowing Obasa to return to power. He would then reportedly resign to make way for another preferred candidate to assume the Speaker’s role.
