Benue Assembly Suspend LG Chairman Over Misconduct, Abuse

Benue state House of Assembly has approved the suspension of Mrs. Kukase Garba for the period of three months.

Mrs Garbage was suspended on allegation of misappropriation of public funds, abuse of executive powers as she runs the affairs of the local council as sole administrator.

She was also found guilty of failing to present budget estimate to the legislative council as well as failure to inform legislative council, the monthly income and expenditure of the local government which violates section 48B of 2007 law as amended.

She was suspended following a letter sent to the assembly in that regard by the Governor of the state through the speaker of the house.

The letter signed by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Tony Ijohor, on behalf of the Governor, alleged gross misconduct, abuse of office and running of the local government as Sole-Administrator.

After reading the letter on the floor by the Speaker, Mr. Titus Una, who conducted a voice vote with all members in support, therefore, confirmed the suspension of the Chairman for three months.

The house also read a bill for the first time; a law to provide for teaching of Tiv, Idoma and Igede languages in all Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions in Benue state.

After the Majority leader of the House, Damian Cheme, presented the Bill sponsored by the Speaker, Titus Uba, the bill was committed to the committee on Rules and Business for further legislative process.

The speaker further advised all standing committees to closely supervise all MDAs under the 2021 budget to ensure they are implemented.

He also called on members to sponsor bills for the good governance of the state.
